Blink****blink****blink****
yawwwwnnnn. mmmmmm.
Time to wake up out of winter hibernation.
Hi eveyone, so, what'd I miss?
I have been quiet this winter, I haven't gone out to that many events or been out and social. A few reasons for that, and other musings....
Work:
If you didn't know, I work at a feline specialty veterinary clinic as a doctor's assistant, kinda like being a nurse, only for pussycats. Much of my energy has been spent here. We have lost a few employees over the course due to pregnancy, family illnesses, and general incompetence. The result is that the rest of us (myself included) have had to pickup the hours and the slack. Lots of eleven hour weekdays and weekends spent doing kennel care and picking up the disasters left over from the week.
Since we have only 1 part time vet technician right now (we usually have 2 full time and 1 part time), I have gotten the wonderful opportunity to learn and do lots of cool stuff that I otherwise would not be able to do.
Probably the coolest thing is learning how to collect blood samples. On a cat, you insert a needle into the jugular vein ideally. You get the best, most forceful flow, hence the quickest sample. You can collect from the veins in the legs as well, however sometimes the blood flow goes so slow, your sample clots in the syringe.
True magic: having your co-worker try to restrain a terrified or feral cat, hanging its legs over the edge of a treatment counter while you focus and syncronize your own mind and spirit with that of the animal, then insert a needle into a vein as small or smaller than a spaghetti noodle and hold it for the 10 seconds it takes to draw some of the animal's living vital life essence into an instrument in your own hand.
Of course the lesser magical work days end up coming home after being pooped on, peed on, or having to comb down a cat with ringworm.
Crafty stuff:
I got a loom this year and learned how to weave. Last year I learned how to spin wool into yarn with a drop spindle, so I am putting it all together and developing a medieval style textile mill in my living room. For me, it's cool in part because one of the foundations of rennaisance Italy was the textile production in the northern cities. Another way to connect with my ancestry in a way that is a bit different. However, heavy wool is not exactly the thing to work with as the spring warms up. Which leads to...
The Garden:
Ok, trying to plant the whole big garden this year. I have never tried anything quite this ambitious before. Of course I have all the witchy things planned. I have seeds for: belladonna, datura, monkshood, skullcap, etc. Flying ointment anyone? We'll see what I get to actually grow.
That is it for now,
signing off,
nanu, nanu.
